The 5th grade classes had the opportunity to travel back in time to Harlem Heights, New York, September 1776. Here is the scene into which the ventured: “New York City is now occupied by the British. Patriot hearts were encouraged with the Declaration of Independence in July of this year. This freedom, however, must now be defended at great cost. At this dark time, boldness on the part of every true patriot is required more than ever. In this life, freedom must continually be defended.”

While visiting Harlem Heights, the students made candles and candle holders, visited with soldiers and learned about their weapons, had discussions with blacksmiths and bakers, and even viewed a surgery. Lastly, they were trained as militia soldiers and engaged in a battle.

They are, thankfully, back safe and sound in 2017, where they continue the study of Colonial life in America.
