Aiming Your Students Toward Virtue by Colleen Leonard, Director of Sola Gratia Classical Academy

If you are educating your own or other people’s children classically, then you desire to instruct them towards virtue. That sounds like a philosophical concept that isn’t very tangible to our lives in practice. However, there are practices and aims that will take your students towards virtue. James K. A. Smith, in his book "You Are What You Love", talks about how humans are teleological creatures, that is; that we are oriented toward a “goal” or an end. It is our loves that orient us toward that ultimate end or telos. When we talk about virtue formation, we are talking about…

4th Grade Family Weekend

Last weekend, students and parents from the 4th-grade class had an amazing time together at Snow Mountain Ranch. Beautiful weather, fun activities, and lasting memories were made. The purpose of this parent sponsored retreat was to create a foundation for future conversations among parents and a tighter bond within the class. Friday night’s activity set the stage for the entire weekend as participants put together a puzzle together, demonstrating how God sees each child individually, made in HIS image. Throughout the weekend, various team activities drove home the realities students face that interfere with understanding their true identity in Christ. As…

Healthy Habits at Home by Principal Jen Wenger

At Arma Dei Academy we desire to partner with parents to raise resilient children who are confident and competent leaders. One of my top priorities this year is to ensure we cultivate a culture among students and families that is countercultural to society. My prayer is that together we strive to raise sturdy children - ones who are empowered through TRUTH. The Lost Tools of Learning by Dorthy L. Sayers

That I, whose experience of teaching is extremely limited, and whose life of recent years has been almost wholly out of touch with educational circles, should presume to discuss education is a matter, surely, that calls for no apology. It is a kind of behaviour to which the present climate of opinion is wholly favourable. Bishops air their opinions about economics; biologists, about metaphysics; celibates, about matrimony; inorganic chemists about theology; the most irrelevant people are appointed to highly-technical ministries; and plain, blunt men write to the papers to say that Epstein and Picasso do not know how to draw. Up…

8th Grade Retreat

Our 8th-grade students spent last Wednesday through Friday on retreat at Camp Idrahaje in Bailey, Colorado. Their time away included team-building exercises and a number of good old-fashioned fun activities, including archery tag, cliff rappelling, a ropes course, water balloon fights, frisbee golf, and night-time games. Morning and evening sessions in an outdoor chapel provided breathtaking views of the Milky Way and gave the students opportunities to study Scripture, pray, develop collective goals for the year, and brainstorm ways that they might serve God and others in the life of the school this year. The students, on their own initiative, committed…

The Armor of God by Mrs. Wenger

Arma Dei is Latin for Armor of God. When Arma Dei Academy was established seven years ago, the name was intentionally chosen. It serves as a daily reminder that the LORD equips us to live the life he has called us to. We all need protection, both physically and spiritually. As humans, we tend to rely on what is seen and what we can control for our protection. However, scripture tells us in 2 Corinthians 5:7 that “we walk by faith, not by sight.” If we want to be protected and equipped to withstand the temptations and attacks we will face…
